Reformer vs mat Pilates – what’s the difference?

Should I try reformer Pilates or mat Pilates? A question I get asked most! And honestly, it’s a great question because they’re both wonderful, and the answer very much depends on you.

First, what do they have in common?

Both reformer and mat Pilates are rooted in the same principles: controlled movement, core connection, breath, and building functional strength from the inside out. Both will challenge you more than you expect.

At Bondi Rise, both formats are taught with the same philosophy: small groups, thoughtful cues, and a space where you can step through the door and take a deep breath.

So what’s actually different?

The reformer is a piece of equipment – a sliding carriage on a spring-loaded frame. Those springs either assist your movement (making exercises more accessible) or resist it (making them more challenging), all within the same class. This makes reformer Pilates incredibly adaptable.

Mat Pilates uses your own bodyweight as resistance. No equipment, no springs – just you and the mat.

Which one should I try first?

Honestly? Both. But if you’re brand new to Pilates, mat is a brilliant foundation – it teaches you the fundamental movement patterns, how to find your breath, and how to connect to your deep core. Many of our most dedicated reformer clients tell me their mat classes completely transformed how much they get out of their reformer sessions.

That said, if reformer is calling you – go for it. Our instructors at both East Molesey and Wimbledon work with beginners on the reformer every single day. The springs mean we can make it as accessible as you need on day one.

A few questions I hear all the time

Is Reformer Pilates harder than mat?

Not necessarily harder, just different. The reformer can be made more challenging through spring settings and exercise progressions, but it can equally be made more supportive. Mat Pilates can be deceptively difficult because your bodyweight is the only resistance and there’s nowhere to hide. Both will give you a genuinely great workout.

Can I do both?

Yes, and I’d encourage it! A mix of reformer and mat throughout your week creates brilliant variety and trains your body in genuinely different ways. Many of our members do exactly this.

What should I wear?

Comfortable workout clothes you can move freely in. For reformer classes, grip socks are required – you can bring your own or grab a pair from us at the studio.

Where to find us
